The whole 34-man crew of the Al-Amal is missing following the sinking of the trawler.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (August 5) evening some 5-miles from the former pirate stronghold of Eyl, coast of Puntland, Somalia’s autonomy state.

The crew members are from Indonesia, Kenya, Vietnam and Yemen.

The Puntland Maritime Police Force is investigating the cause of the sinking. Search and rescue operation is ongoing. 

According to reports, since last year Al-Amal has been involved in poaching in Somali waters.

Al-Amal (IMO 7831197) was built in 1978. The Korean-registered vessel has an Yemeni owner.
