Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), the preferred gateway to Jordan and beyond, has added a new accolade to its extensive portfolio of achievements, after winning the 2014 Workplace Safety and Health Award from the Social Security Corporation. The award was announced during a ceremony on March 29, which was held under the patronage of the Jordanian Minister of Labor and Board Chairman of the Social Security Corporation, Dr. Nidal Qatamin, and attended by the Director General of the Social Security Corporation, Nadia Al Rawabdah, as well as various representatives from different economic sectors.
Commenting on the award, the CEO of the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), Jeppe Jensen, said, “We at ACT are proud to once again receive the outstanding award for implementing high safety standards. Winning this honor, especially in the presence of so many strong, competitive companies and organizations, reflects the seriousness and diligence with which ACT takes its commitment to upholding health and safety standards in the workplace, through which we aim to guarantee the wellbeing of all our employees. As the Kingdom’s primary gateway and a crucial hub for business and commerce, it is important for us to lead by example, not only for the sake of our reputation locally, regionally, and internationally, but to support the transformation of Aqaba into a strategic regional and international center for business and commerce.”
Meanwhile, the Head of ACT’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Department, Feras Al Taweil, said, “As a subsidiary of APM Terminals, we at ACT are committed to complying with the most rigorous standards and practices in our industry. By going above and beyond local standards for workplace health and safety, we aim to continue elevating ACT safety standards on an international level and best practices in the industry, thereby contributing to the Kingdom’s economic growth and status.”
ACT received this latest award after successfully exceeding all health and safety standards and benchmarks set by the relevant Jordanian authorities. The terminal has undergone rigorous inspections and evaluations, and consistently works to identify and resolve all potential work hazards. Additionally, employees at ACT undergo regular training on a comprehensive array of health and safety issues, preparing them to deal with all kinds of emergencies and contingencies.
Thanks to its ongoing commitment to health and safety and the implementation of its new risk management procedures, the Aqaba Container Terminal witnessed a 32 percent decrease in health- and safety-related incidents between 2014 and 2015, while safety checks and observations increased by 13 percent during the same period.
