The chemical tanker Amonith lost propulsion power in English Canal, off Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. The vessel was proceeding in northern direction through the separation scheme en route from Leixoes port, Portugal to Rotterdam port with 4000 tons of toluol.
The tanker lost propulsion power after engine failure and crew was unable to restart it. The Master requested assistance from the CROSS Gris-Nez and the chemical tanker Amonith was towed to Dunkirk anchorage and brought to anchor. The ship will wait for repair team, which was provided by vessel’s manager. The local authorities detained the vessel until further repairs, inspection and survey.
During the incident there were no injured people and no water pollution. The investigation for the root cause is under way. There was no immediate danger for the nearby vessels or grounding of the chemical tanker, but the traffic in the separation scheme in English Canal was hampered after blackout.
The chemical tanker Amonith (IMO: 9164093) has overall length of 87.00 m, moulded beam of 15.00 m and maximum draft of 6.25 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 4,482 DWT and the gross tonnage is 3,218 GRT. The ship was built in 1999 by Euroflex Marine in their shipyard in Aarhus, Denmark. The owner and operator of the chemical tanker Amonith is Polish company Unibaltic Shipping.
