Rickmers Hamburg collided with the self-propelled barge Jiang Shun 1318 early on Saturday (May 30) resulting in one victim, one is still unaccounted for. The accident occurred near Tianjin, China, in poor visibility.
Preliminary reports show that the barge came across the Rickmers Hamburg's route while the vessel was leaving Tianjin en route for Kobe. Having been hit in the aft section, the hull of the barge was breached which caused her partially to sink with only part of her bow above the water. One of Jiang Shun 1318's crew died and another one went missing.
Following an order by the authorities, Rickmers Hamburg anchored on Tianjin outer roads. There is no information if the German freighter has been damaged.
