Brazilian operator Alianca, subsidiary of the German Hamburg Süd added a new container ship to its cabotage fleet.
In a company press release, the company announced the christening of the container ship Vicente Pinzon, which took place on June 20 at the Terminal Maritimo de Passageiros in the Port of Santos in front of nearly 500 guests. The port is the most important for the shipping group in South America in terms of the number of transports, also the first in the worldwide liner network.

Over the last two years, Alianca has launched a total of six newbuildings for its cabotage services. Four of the ships feature a slot capacity of 3,800 TEUs each and two of them 4,800 TEUs each.
The new supplements in Alianca fleet have set new standards in the Brazilian coastal routes in terms of their capacity and environmental friendliness. The latest newbuild Vicente Pinzon completed the expansion and modernisation of the company’s cabotage fleet.
The Vicente Pinzón, along with sister ship Bartolomeu Dias, which was christened in April, are the largest vessels to ever be deployed by Aliança in its Brazilian coastal routes. The ships have capacity of 4,800 TEUs each (including 600 reefer slots).
The newbuild ship was named after the Spanish seafarer and explorer Vicente Yáñez Pinzón, who reached the Brazilian coast on 26 January 1500 in what is today Pernambuco.
The sponsor of the new ship is Maria do Rosário Fischer, which is a daughter-in-law of Alianҫa’s founder Carl Fischer, who died in 1980.
Part in the christening took as well Frank Smet, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, and officials of the regional management of the company for the South America’s East Coast Region.
