On Tuesday, Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister, was in Ras Laffan Industrial City in order to hold the official inauguration of the USD 1 billion worth Jetty Boil-Off Gas Recovery (JBOG) project which is going to be the world’s biggest environmental project.
The project comes along the lines of the Common Facilities Projects at RLIC. Qatargas manages all project-related operations on behalf of RasGas and Qatar Petroleum.
The project itself aims to establish a recovery program for the gas flared by the loading of liquefied natural gas at Ras Laffan Port’s six LNG berths, as it was stated by Qatargas via a statement.
It will also contribute for reducing 90% of the current flaring levels at the above-mentioned berths, which will be equivalent to yearly Green House Gas (GHG) savings in the rough amount of 1.6 million tones of CO2. Additionally, the project is going to also contribute for recovering twenty-nine billion standard cubic feet (bscf) of gas on an annual basis, which will be enough to produce approximately 750 MW of power, which can be a sufficient amount for the powering of around 300,000 homes.
Ras Laffan happens to be the world’s biggest LNG export terminal and the single facility capable of loading multiple LNG ships simultaneously.
Qatargas underwent a partnership with GE in order to construct the first model of the biggest low pressure compressors in the world, that are to serve the purposes of the JBOG project, the company added in the statement.
The first jetty boil-off gas recovery was carried out back in October of last year. Since then jetty boil-off gas has been successfully recovered from more than 500 vessels.
