The government of Kenya has sent 62 convicted Somali pirates back to their country. The perpetrators have already served their time in prison.

According to information by the deputy chief at Shimo la Tewa Prison, Meshack Okiya, currently the number of pirates serving in Kenyan prisons is 164. Next week, another 14 are to be released and repatriated.

“The government is working with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to facilitate the transfer of pirates who have completed their jail terms in the country,” he was quoted saying for Xinhua.

Meanwhile, the Somali government has been trying to reach an agreement with Kenya to allow convicted Somalis serving prison terms in Kenya to be repatriated back.
