Located on the eastern part of the Saint George Bay on Beirut's northern Mediterranean coast, the Port of Beirut is an important gateway for transporting freight to the Gulf States, Jordan, Iraq and Syria along with Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport.
The Port of Beirut is the main Lebanese port and also one of the largest and busiest on the Eastern Mediterranean. It is situated on a total area of 1,200,000 square meters. The port has 16 quays and 4 basins as well as one brand new container terminal, which is fully capable to handle with 745,000 twenty-foot equivalent units annually.
All this is a result of the hard work to reconstruct the existing port facilities and to build new constructions, including administrative buildings in compliance with the Updating and Expansion Program, which was implemented in action right after the the end of the Lebanese Civil War in 1990.
Today the port is run by Gestion et exploitation du port de Beyrouth (GEPB), which in fact is Port Authority of Beirut. As only the container terminal is managed by the private company Beirut Container Terminal Consortium (BCTC).
