Taiwan-based ocean shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport place an order to Japanese shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding for five 14,000 TEU containerships.

The five newbuild boxships will be chartered out to Japan’s liner company Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. The vessels are expected to be delivered in 2018 and 2019.

The total order cost is estimated for nearly USD 625 million, with Yang Ming paying USD 125 million for each vessel.

Earlier this year in July, the Taiwanese shipping company ordered five 14,000 TEU boxships at Imabari Shipbuilding, with an option to extend the order to five additional ships.

In addition Yang Ming has another five 14,000 TEU boxships on order which will be chartered from Taiwan-based shipbuilder CSBC Corp. once completed in 2016.
