Container ship OOCL Europe, which made her maiden call at King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam this week, was welcomed by its newest terminal operator Saudi Global Ports (SGP).

The 8,063 teu vessel, arriving on the OOCL-Cosco- joint Middle East Asia Express Service, took advantage of SGP’s nearly 16 m of water depth, the deepest in the region.

The terminal, which completed construction within three years and started operations earlier this year, is expected to able to support 1.8m teu annually, with a 3,937-foot quay and 12 quay cranes.

“The completion and start-up of the SGP container terminal in Dammam is testament to the close cooperation between the Saudi Ports Authority, King Abdul Aziz Port Authority, Customs Authority, Saudi Railway Organisation and our shareholders, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and PSA International,” said Abdulla Zamil, chairman of SGP. “I would like to thank all the parties involved for their great support that has enabled SGP to achieve this significant milestone. I would also like to extend our deepest appreciation to our customers, OOCL and Cosco, for their trust in SGP.

“I am confident that this important gateway port will help the region grow its trade and business activities.”
