This project was the first time that Huisman (and Jumbo) installed a VLS tower outside their own yard and upended it with a Heavy lift vessel (HLV).

Spotted: Jumbo installs and upends a VLS tower for Huisman

THE CHALLENGE

Huisman required Jumbo team to load a 1200t vertical lay system (VLS) and various general cargo at their yard in Schiedam and transit to the VARD shipyard in Suapé, Brazil.

In Brazil, Jumbo’ MV Fairmaster and her crew moored alongside the EP-10 newbuild hull to discharge, install and upend the VLS tower. Here, Jumbo also discharged and installed various Flex-lay equipment and two pieces for knuckle boom cranes. Watch the video below to see all of this in action!

FLEX-LAY

Over the years, Huisman has designed and delivered a large number of Flex-lay systems. The Flex-lay method combines capabilities for the installation of flexible pipelines, risers and in-line structures. Flex-lay systems offer an efficient pipe-lay method with a specific advantage: the installed pipelines are less sensitive to fatigue and therefore require less complex installation and Abandonment & Recovery procedures.

THE JUMBO ADVANTAGE - SMART SHIPPING. NO SURPRISES

What Jumbo brings to these projects is the expertise of its operators and engineers. Inventive yet safe and efficient ways to ship and install cargoes of all shapes and sizes are engineered on a daily basis at Jumbo. For this project, Jumbo worked closely with its client to create a highly customised solution. The added complexity of upending the tower abroad instead of at the shipyard meant smart logistics planning, design and engineering were essential.
