Peab has been commissioned to dredge Köping Port and then handle the dredged material. The customer is Köping Municipality and the contract is worth SEK 170 million.

Peab refurbishes the port in Köping, Sweden

The project entails dredging up an area of around 4.5 kilometers on the outer edge of the port area in Köping. The project also includes dredging three other areas in the shipping lane. This will be done primarily to widen and ensure the proper depth along the shipping lane’s outer edges. It will generate a total of around 250,000 m2 dredged material. The polluted dredged material will be encapsulated so that it can then be reused and become a work space for industrial operations. The unpolluted material will be returned to specified places in Lake Mälaren.

“As a community builder we are proud to prepare the shipping lane together with Köping Municipality so that bigger ships carrying larger volumes of goods can traffic the port. Taking care of the dredged material and reusing it also minimizes transportation and purchasing new products, which ensures a sustainable expansion of the port,” says Carl Johan Söderberg, Region Manager at Peab.

Development of Köping Port is included, together with the port in Västerås, in the Lake Mälaren Project, which is one of Sweden’s largest shipping projects.

“We are very pleased with the procurement and look forward to working well with Peab on dredging the Köping Port inlet. Dredging will make it possible for larger ships to navigate Köping Port, which generates both opportunities for companies in the region and environmental gains,” Christer Nordling, Technical Director of Köping Municipality.

The project is a turnkey contract that will start in November 2020 and is expected to be completed in October 2022.

The project will be order registered in the fourth quarter 2020.
