Luka Koper port in Slovenia has received its biggest container ship up to that date. That has happened with the 367 metre long Gerda Maersk's anchoring on Tuesday, just weeks after finalizing downward extension of its seabed that has been expected for a long time. That procedure has made possible the docking of bigger vessels.

The 10,150-TEU Gerda Maersk docked at the port on Tuesday. A couple of days before that a different container ship - belonging to China’s Alliance Ocean 3- having a total weight of 5,668 TEU, has called at the port. Presently Koper is the biggest container port situated in the northern Adriatic.

According to Luka Koper, both parties have selected Koper as the first Adriatic port in their journey. That is utterly significant for counterparts because they demand short transit times for their freight circling between Europe and Asia. Koper is also anticipating the visit of ships belonging to the third new container service - of Taiwan-based Evergreen Line.

In the beginning of February, COSCO-the Chinese shipping company has launched a weekly container service travelling between Koper and Greek and Turkish ports. The service, which has been named Adriatic Greece Turkey (AGT) will start operating with the help of three container ships having a potential in the scope of 600 to 800 TEU.The Mediterranean Car-Carrier Line (MCCL) has also made public a weekly Ro-Ro service linking Koper to the Black Sea. The service will have the following turn: Koper – Piraeus – Derince – Poti – Constanta – Derince – Piraeus – Koper and it may deliver freight to both inland areas Tbilisi and Baku.

In the meantime, container-train operator BalticRail has remodeled its container block train service from Koper to Wroclaw, Poland. It has launched a new container terminal in Wroclaw-Siechnice and has supplemented the Ostrava Paskov terminal with a second weekly train that will operate on its south-bound route.
