On February 21 authorities of Malta Freeport announced that their terminals had been chosen for main transhipment hub in the Central Mediterranean by the 2 of the major alliances in the business.

The management of Malta Freeport is aware that the Ocean Three Alliance, composed of CMA CGM, China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), and 2M Alliance, made up of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), have made this decision, because the Freeport's facilities offer to carriers all the necessary equipment and infrastructure to run their business as efficient as possible even when their largest vessels should be served.
