On November 19th the container vessel Jonni Ritscher started its journey from the Port of Sillamäe to the Port of Rotterdam, thus setting the beginning of regular container vessel calls to the Port of Sillamäe. The vessel is operated by the world’s largest overseas cargo and freight carrier Maersk Line, while handling operations in the Port of Sillamäe are performed by the multifunctional terminal SilSteve.

A total of 382 TEUs empty and laden containers were handled during the first call.

The establishing of a regular container vessel service marks a milestone in the port development which will facilitate the handling of smaller cargo lots as well. Together with the container line a regular trade connection was established between Sillamäe and the Port of Hamina-Kotka across the Finnish Gulf.

This event is even more important for the economy in the North-East and South of Estonia as local companies are given the opportunity to export and import cargo on beneficial terms through Sillamäe.

As a result new job openings shall be created in SilSteve itself as well as in the whole region.
