Oil spill from a tanker off Cape Town

By Vessels

4 years ago, a Turkish operated tanker run aground off the coast of Cape Town, a famous tourist destination in South Africa. There is an oil spill that threatens the environment. The ship is registered in Panama and was transporting 30,000 tonnes of coal and 600 tonnes of heavy fuel. The vessel was sailing to Gibraltar 2009 when engine problems stopped its voyage.
A clean-up operation was taking place and there was planned an explosion which unfortunately damaged the tanker. The problem is that this explosion destroyed one of the tanks and the oil was released into the water.
Environment experts informed that the threat is not serious but this is the 2nd spill in a year. 8 months ago the leaked oil threatened the city's beaches.
