Asleep captain of cargo ship hits rocks of Sicily

The captain of a 130-metre cargo ship that hit rocks in Messina at the weekend has been dozed off with the ship on autopilot, has shown interrogation.
Sergy Kryvodud, the 41-year-old Ukrainian captain of the Hc Rubina has awoken when the vessel has been too close to shore to avoid a collision, said he under interrogation by magistrates.
The ship is grounded, yards from people's homes, in the port's Ganzirri district. The coast guard has ignored the initial warnings for the ship`s approach on Saturday night.
There`s only been time to slow the ship and reduce the impact when Mr. Kryvodud has woken. He is suspected by prosecutors of causing a shipwreck and violating marine law.
