8 Missing Crew members after Barge Capsized Off Singapore

An operation for search and rescue is underway off Singapore for 8 missing crew members of a barge, which capsized on Thursday, July 25.

According to the information released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Thursday, the Mongolian-flagged barge, Guo Liang 677, capsized just after noon on 24th of July in Singapore waters about 7 n.m. north of Horsburgh Lighthouse.

A total of 10 crew members - all Chinese nationals - were aboard the Mongolian barge when it capsized. One crew member was safely rescued by a patrol vessel of the Police Coast Guard (PCG) and another one crew member was picked up by a boat in the vicinity.

As of Thursday evening, the ongoing search and rescue operations involved 2 Super Puma helicopters and a Fokker-50 Maritime Patrol Aircraft from the Air Force of Republic of Singapore, 3 patrol boats from the Republic of Singapore Navy, 2 PCG patrol craft, divers and 2 diving support boats from Resolve Salvage & Fire (Asia), and 14 passing merchant ships.

Maritime Port Authority is currently investigating the accident.
