22 Rescued, few Missing after Migrant Boat Sinks Off Libya

The coast guard of Italy helped rescue of 22 migrants on Friday, July 26, and is coordinating a search for missing migrants after obtaining a distress call from a vessel, which ran into difficulties off the coast of Libya.

Coast guards in Sicily dispatched 2 merchant vessels sailing under Panamanian flag towards the migrant vessel that they found about 29 nautical miles off the Libyan coast when they obtained the distress call.

One of Italian coast guard vessels rescued 20 migrants from the sea and found their half-submerged inflatable vessel. The 2nd vessel picked up 2 migrants, the Italy coastguard reported in a press release.

A spokesman for the Italian coast guard told it wasn't clear how many migrants were on the vessel but that searches were ongoing. He also said that the migrants rescued so far were from sub-Saharan Africa.

Maritime officials have also directed an Italian and a Maltese merchant ship to the scene to assist search for the missing people.
