Under the leadership of Toshitomo Matsui who is EVP of ClassNK , the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team is carrying out a strict and exhaustive investigation of the causes of the MOL Comfort casualty.
ClassNK proceeds promptly with the analysis work, and advance findings are expected by early September 2013.
Based on the current findings of the ongoing investigation and analysis, the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team has revealed that the damage leading to the loss of the container ship MOL Comfort didn't originate from the ship's upper deck area or hatch side coaming.
As a preventative safety step, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) have made plans to further increase the hull strength of the sister ships of the sunken MOL Comfort. Those plans have been approved by ClassNK and updates are provided via the ClassNK website.
Measures taken to strengthen the hulls of MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, and MOL Creation were recently accomplished and those ships return to Asia-North Europe service starting at 10th of August.
