MV Smart bulk carrier runs aground up near Richards Bay

MV Smart bulk carrier have troubles near Richards Bay on the KwaZulu Natal North coast. The 230 metre long cargo vessel has run aground.

All 23 crew members plus the pilot are safe and have been ordered to abandon MV Smart. The captain had to protect the people. Reports and additional information showed that the ship is breaking apart .

The reason for the incident is believed to be a mechanical problem which occurred while MV Smart was leaving the Richards Bay port. The vessel received help by 3 tugs trying to pull her to the sea but the rough weather conditions managed to stop the operation.

The cargo ship is now positioned on a shallow bank near the port's exit. The vessel is damaged and is breaking apart.
National Sea Rescue Institute informs that the ship is transporting an undisclosed amount of coal.
