Cargo ship Riona ran aground due to navigation error in Finland

Riona cargo ship ran aground yesterday south off Kasnas, Finland. Bad weather conditions lead to a navigation error, the ship stopped due to mud on the bottom. The vessel Riona is slightly damaged with a small hole on the bow, the danger comes from the position of the hole that is near the ship fuel tanks.

After inspection near the location of the incident it was found that there is no water pollution and the situation is under control. The ship Riona has to be re-floated and a tug was sent to help the cargo ship. The process of saving the vessel was successful and after several attempts the ship is freed and towed to the port of Frojdbole. The hull will be inspected carefully and repaired.  

The water was one more time inspected for pollution by the vessel Halli. The ship Riona was carrying 17 tons of fuel. No injuries were reported. 

Riona is a general cargo ship built in 1988 by the shipyard Cassens Werft in Emden. The vessel has IMO number 8806072 and length of 69 meters, draft 2.40m.
