A search for three missing sailors is ongoing close to Waigaoqiao Port in the Pudong New Area after two cargo vessels collided yesterday. The accident happened early in the morning near the mouth of Yangtze River.
Wuxiang 66 and Xinwang 88 were sailing in dense fog when at 2:58 AM they collided. Xinwang 88 sank ditching all its crew. Rescue vessels came immediately at the scene but only four out of the seven crew members were found. The rescue operation was interfered by the heavy fog.
The collision delayed a few ships in the channel. A cruise ship from Royal Caribbean fleet was forced to dock outside the port. Affected by the fog yesterday morning were also the ferries to Chongming Island, the cruises around the Port of Yangshan and the cruise ships at Wusong Port.
The dense fog reduced the visibility to less than 500 m, including in the city area. A yellow alert was triggered at 5:09 AM. The flights into Pudong International Airport were redirected.
