The 665-foot freighter 'Federal Kivalina' has been reported aground after the problems two days ago. The vessel's location is about 1/3 miles from the Thousand Island Bridge. Federal Kivalina is currently at anchor upriver.
The vessel traffic in the region had to be suspended. Despite the incident, there is no information about hurt crew members and no evidence of pollution has been spotted. Coast Guard teams, in cooperation with the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, are investigating the cause of the incident and are overseeing the salvage.
A dive team was dispatched to the location of the vessel in order to inspect the damage of the hull yesterday. The underwater survey revealed that the Federal Kivalina was aground, but stable at the moment. A salvage team is heading to the scene to conduct a strategy for safe removal of the ship. At first place, the hull inspection reports have to be ready and if the weather and water conditions allow, the salvage operation will start.
