Sea Champion on fire in the Sea of Japan, one dead

Sea Champion, a Russian cargo ship, has caught fire in the Sea of Japan. The incident occurred on August 7 at around 7:40 a.m. LT off the coast of Primorye (7.4 miles south-east of Cape Swivel, Nakhodka) and resulted in one victim. The vessel was en route from Vladivostok to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky carrying vehicles and containers.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire broke out in the engine room of the vessel, but the cause and all circumstances of the crew member's death are yet to be determined.

Although the crew managed to contain the fire, they were evacuated on a nearby fishing boat. The Sea Champion vessel was towed to Vladivostok port, with the assistance of the tug Lazurit, where the fire was finally extinguished.

Sea Champion (IMO number 8322117 and MMSI 273330730) was built in 1984. The 107-meter vessel has a DWT of 6,025 tonnes.
