A Tanker under Liberian flagg has reportedly been hijacked of the coast of Oman in the same general location of a violent but attack has failed by a pirate action group yesterday.
According to a statement, a group of Somali pirates have kidnapped the MT Smyrni approximately 450NM South East of Salalah, Oman while it has been transitting in the International Transit Corridor. The MT Smyrni did not have a security team on its board and so far we don't know the condition of the crew members.
The kidnapping follows a violent attack versus an oil tanker yesterday in the same location and possibly by the same group of Somali pirates.
According to the IMB reports, Somali pirates in 2 skiffs armed with AK47s and RPGs approached a so far unidentified crude oil tanker underway and fired 7 RPG rounds and over AK47 300 rounds at the ship from a distance of just 50m. Still, the oil tanker has been able to evade a hijacking by taking effective measures against the pirates. Nobody was injured in the pirate attack, but the ship is stated to have sustained injury as a result. It is not very clear if the ship had a security team onboard at the time of the attack.
