Amadeo 1 capsizes in Kirke Canal

By Accidents

Amadeo 1, a ro-ro vessel, has capsized in the Kirke Canal in southern Chile. The incident occurred on August 18 at about 10:15 a.m. local time when the vessel hit a rock some 100 nm northwest of Punta Arenas.

The Amadeo 1 suffered breach in starboard resulting in water ingress. This forced the vessel to capsize in the shallow waters near the coast. Currently the vessel is laying with most of its hull above the sea.

At the time of the incident the vessel was en route from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt carrying 17 passengers and 28-man crew. The passengers were reported to have been safely evacuated while some of the crew members remained on the scene to assist the salvage works. The Chilean Navy is working on the site with main priority preventing potential pollution.

Amadeo 1 (IMO number 7427752 and MMSI 725018200) was built in 1976 and is registred in Chile. Manager of the 126-meter vessel is Navimag.
