Mitsui Engineering develops prototype medium size multi gas carrier

By Curious

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has been developing a prototype medium multi gas carrier size. The 82,000 cu.m vessel will be able to transport LNG and shale gas co-products, such as LEG (ethane and ethylene gas).

According to the Japanese company, in the next decade chances are that LNG carriers will be divided into large scale and medium scale vessels serving hub ports world wide. In the same time, the generally smaller in size LEG carriers are likely to grow in size which will make them size-alike ( in terms of the capacity) a med-size LNG carrier.

The new prototype has been named "neo82GC" and has been developed in accordance with the MES expectation of the market – the two trends above and the growing trade scale of LNG such as propane and butane. The upcoming multi gas carrier will join the Eco-friendly vessel lineup of MES.

"In the past years, MES has developed and offered to the market its “neo” series, next generation eco-friendly ships, in bulk carrier sector. This time, gas carrier is added to the lineup," the company says on its website.

The further technical review of the prototype will be supported by Moss Maritime under a partnership agreement with MES.
