The newest DP World automated terminal in Jebel Ali (Container Terminal 3) has welcomed its first vessel.

The call of APL Phoenix yesterday was the first step of the way for the new terminal to become fully operational in 2015.

The DP World's Chairman, HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, welcomed the first vessel saying:

"We are proud to welcome the APL Phoenix to Terminal 3 as trial operations begin at our newest terminal. As the USD 850 million Terminal 3 comes on line, it will support the growth of Dubai, the UAE and the wider region."

According to DP, Container Terminal 3 will be the largest semi-automated one in the world. The draft of the terminal is 18m and the infrastructure allows simultaneous handling of as many as 10 ships.

APL President Kenneth Glenn commented:

"As the world's biggest semi-automated facility, Terminal 3 is well-equipped to provide our ships with optimal and sustainable service efficiency and reliability. This is a key success factor for the container liner business."

The new terminal is equipped with 19 modern quay cranes remotely operated from a control room off the quayside.
