Indian Navy corvette damaged following a collision with container vessel

The Indian Navy missile corvette INS Kora has sustained damage as a result of a collision with the container carrier Madeleine Rickmers.

The accident occurred in the Bay of Bengal, some 300 nm off Visakhapatnam, on October 31 at about 3:53 local time. The warship was en route from Vizag to Port Blair escorted by the INS Gaj while the container vessel was sailing to Colombo from Chittagong. There were no reports of injuries.

Following the collision, both vessels continued towards their destinations. The cause of the accident will be investigated by a Board of Inquiry.

INS Kora is a Kora-class corvette built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers and outfitted at Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL). The 1,350-tonne vessel is equipped with four quad-launchers for 3M-24 anti-ship missiles.

MV Madeleine Rickmers (IMO number 9134660 and MMSI 538090020) was built in 1997 and is regsitered in the Marshal Islands. The 23,062-DWT vessel has a capacity of 1,694 TEUs and is managed by MCC Transport Singapore.
