Bulk carrier hits the Brooklyn Bridge

By Accidents

The Gibraltar-registered bulk carrier Rainbow Quest hit the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River in New York on November 7 at around 11 pm local time, according to the US Coast Guard (USCG).

On Friday night, en route from the Brooklyn Navy Yard down the East River, the light tower of Rainbow Quest struck the underside of the famous bridge that links Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Following the incident, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) closed the bridge to assess it for damage. Luckily, there were no reports of any injuries, damage or pollution. The bridge was reopened for traffic.

Preliminary reports showed that at the time of the mishap the river's tide was high, but not at its highest point.

Rainbow Quest (IMO number 9498298 and MMSI 236111696) was built in 2011. The 180-metre bulk carrier has a deadweight of 34,627-DWT.
