Bulk carrier aground and holed near Richards Point

By Vessels

The Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Skawa has run aground on a shallow in the St. Lawrence River due to main engine blackout.

The accident occured on November 15 near Richards Point while the vessel was heading downstream en route from Port Colborne to Montreal.

Having passed over the shoal, Skawa stopped in deeper water. The accident resulted in a hole into its forepeak tank which caused the vessel to start taking in water.

The water ingress was brought under control by the crew who pumped air into the holed tank. There were no reports of injuries as well as pollution.

Skawa (IMO number 9521863 and MMSI 636015278) was built in 2012. The 13,579-GT vessel is 150 metres long.

Current position of Skawa.
