Аllision closes the great Northern Lock of Kiel Canal

The great Northern Lock of Kiel Canal has been closed as a general cargo vessel allided with a gate today around noon, local time.

The 8,690-DWT Vectis Eagle was en route from Muuga to Gijon when she hit the gate while entering in Holtenau. The allision resulted in major damage to the gate which will have to be replaced.

The cost of the damage has been estimated to nearly €100,000. There were no reports of injuries or pollution released. The repair works have already begun with water police on the site.

The great North Lock is expected to open on November 26.

Vectis Eagle (IMO number 9594286 and MMSI 235089915) was built in 2012 and is registered in the United Kingdom.

Following the accident, the 110-metre cargo vessel was towed by the tugs Kitzeberg and Holtenau and docked in the East Shore Port around 2 pm local time.
