Port of Long Beach has posted on YouTube a video which showcases the tests of a new anti-pollution system that are running at the port.
The Alternative Maritime Emission Control System (AMECS) was announced in February this year. It diverts the emissions of a docked vessel into an air-pollution filter-and-treatment device. The AMECS was developed by Californian company Advanced Cleanup Technology Inc (ACTI).
The investments made for testing the system were some $2 million, according to the port authorities.
The system, which is portable and barge-mounted, attaches to the exhaust of a vessel and removes polluting materials from its emissions. The tests are being assessed by regional air quality authorities both for safety and pollution-reducing effectiveness.
