The Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) coal carrier Soma Maru was named Bulk Ship of the Year at the IBJ Awards 2014, the company announced. The special ceremony took place on November 17 in Rotterdam. The award was sponsored by ClassNK.
The IBJ Awards are held annually by “International Bulk Journal”, a maritime industry magazine based in the United Kingdom. The awards recognize and praise organizations and companies which contribute to different fields of the world's bulk carrier industry.
Soma Maru (IMO number 9675212 and MMSI 636016510) was delivered in February 2014 and is registered in Liberia. The coal carrier was jointly developed by MOL and Sanoyas Shipyard. The state-of-the-art vessel serves for Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc.
Soma Maru was designed with a wide beam and shallow draft. The vessel is equipped with various safety features and energy-saving specifications and was chosen for the award for its versatility and environmental performance. The 235-metre coal carrier has a deadweight of 104,200-DWT.
