Tanker explosion off Zhanjiang port results in two missing crew members

Two seafarers are reported to be missing after the 4, 243-DWT product tanker Run Guang 9 (built in 2013) exploded on January 4th near the Zhanjiang port at around 9:40 local time. The news came from the Maritime Safety Administration, Guandong province, China.

The tanker was sailing from Zhuhai port to Zhanjiang when fire burst out in one of its cargo holds which resulted in the explosion of the vessel, occurring around 13 kilometres off the coast. 

Three, out of the twelve remaining crew members that were rescued, were given special medical attention and hospitalized afterwards, fortunately without any life-threatening injuries.

Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Administration (ZMSA) was in charge of the search and rescue operations. More than ten vessels were engaged. The fire on the vessel was put out in the afternoon hours of January 4th and was boarded by ZMSA officers.

The rescue teams are still searching for the two missing seafarers.
