The largest oil rig in the word is considered to be the Perdido.
It operates in the Gulf of Mexico, some 200 miles south of Galveston, at a water depth of about 2,450m (8,000 feet).
The Shell-operated Perdido extracts oil from 22 oil wells and is connected a 44 km (27 mile) network of umbilical pipelines on the ocean floor. The pipelines, in turn, bring oil to the surface by connecting with four risers.
Located in the Perdido fold belt, the 267-metre platform has a peak production of 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
