IMO Secretary-General about ballast water and Costa Concordia accident

IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu has announced to governments and the shipping industry to pay attention on a number of key problems. In a keynote address to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) Conference yesterday in London (12 September 2012), Mr. Sekimizu informed shipowners that they have to influence the flag States to ratify the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 (Ballast Water Management Convention) quickly.
Secretary-General recalled to the new technologies available of treatment of ballast water. The convention should be ratified as soon as possible this is important for the world trade.
Koji Sekimizu talked about Costa Concordia accident and said that safety of big passenger vessels is very important and has to improve dramatically.
He said that measures of energy efficiency should be considered too.
