Mega container ship COSCO HOPE reportedly collided with gantry crane boom while leaving eastern Port Said container terminal around midnight LT on Tuesday (May 3). Boom crashed down on containers on berth causing fire which engulfed more than 20 containers. According to reports at least two people were injured.
It is not clear what exactly caused the fire. According to available information one of the containers damaged by the crane boom was loaded with inflammable chemicals.
After the incident the container ship COSCO HOPE left the port and it was anchored on Port Said anchorage. The vessel didn’t suffer any serious damages.
The fire at Port Said reportedly is under control, fire engines and canal tugs were deployed in firefighting.
