Around 80 per cent of global trade by volume and over 70 per cent of global trade by value are carried by sea and are handled by ports worldwide, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). On the back of this ever-growing significance of seaborne trade, “Shipping: Indispensable to the World” has been rightfully chosen as the theme of the “World Maritime Day 2016” event.
As one of the biggest shipping conglomerates in the world with a solid performance track record, Bahri, a global leader in logistics and transportation, today announced its platinum sponsorship of the World Maritime Day 2016 event to be held under the patronage of HRH Prince Saud Bin Naif Bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Eastern Province from 25-29 September 2016.

Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will be attending the event along with representatives from various sister and friendly countries, and number of ministries and government entities led by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Transport and Saudi Ports Authority. Apart from Bahri, a number of major companies and organizations from the maritime industry will be actively participating, underlining the importance of the event and its accompanying activities as well as the significance of the Kingdom and its vital role within the industry on a regional and international level.
The World Maritime Day event reflects the Kingdom’s distinctive position on the regional and global maritime transportation map. The Kingdom marks this day during the last week of September each year as part of the celebrations of the IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent pollution from ships. This year's event will include maritime shows, exhibition and presentations related to the maritime transportation sector.
Ibrahim Al Omar, CEO of Bahri said, “As a global leader in logistics and maritime transportation, we are pleased to be sponsoring and playing an important role in this event in close collaboration with the Kingdom’s Port Authority. We strongly believe that this event will contribute to the development of the maritime industry in the Kingdom and across the world while also strengthening the bonds of cooperation between Bahri and other industry stakeholders.”
“We are certain that this strategic event will fuel our efforts to enhance our global presence thereby enabling the opening of new trade routes and positioning Saudi Arabia, with its commercial and industrial ports, as a unique regional logistics gateway to three continents. It will also support us in our commitment to play an integral and leading role in realizing the transportation goal of the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision as well as its goal of enhancing its economic integration and connectivity regionally and internationally”, added Al Omar.
