A Sri Lankan seafarer on an Ajman-based vessel which was hijacked by Somali pirates 2 years ago has been released.
MV Orana is owned by Kassab Inter Shipping LLC, including a Sri Lankan called KAS Soorasena.
He's now been handed to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya, according to a statement by Sri Lanka’s ministry of external affairs on Friday. There is information that the nineteen crewmembers have been released.
“The ministry of external affairs was in constant connection with the owner of the hijacked ship with a view of securing the free Mr Soorasena while keeping his family briefed about the developments on a regular basis,” according to the announcement.
“During the last visit of president Mahinda Rajapaksa to Dubai visiting the World Energy Forum (WEF), Prof GL Peiris, minister of external affairs, persuaded the shipping company to make early arrangements to assure the freedom of Mr Soorasena.”
