Lloyd’s Register pronounced yesterday that ‘Maersk Malacca’ of Diana Shipping Services S.A. is the 1st Greek owned ship that is going to to be issued with Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) certification by Lloyd’s Register.
Simeon Palios, who is Director and President of Diana Shipping, stated: “We are very proud to be between the pioneers in obtaining a MLC Certificate and in implementing the Convention’s requirements on the board of our ship ‘Maersk Malacca’. This accomplishment was made through the strong connection built over the years with our seamen and also through the strong support and knowledge sharing of Lloyd’s Register.”
The first ship inspection was conducted on board the Marshall Islands-registered container vessel at Livorno on the 19th of December, 2012 where it was found to be in complete compliance with the requirements of the Maritime Convention.
The Maritime Labour Convention Certificate has now been handed over to Simeon Palios by Apostolos Poulovassilis, Lloyd’s Register Marine Regional Manager EMEA, during the time of a ceremony at the premises of the organization in Athens. “It's a major addition to the package of International Maritime Regulations and that must go a long way in assuring a level playing field for decent working and living conditions onboard vessels globally.”, told Apostolos Poulovassilis.
