Lives Trading: Pirates offer to release 46 Indians for 120 Somalis

By Piracy

As the trial of 120 Somali pirates starts in Mumbai, the government of India has obtained a communication from Somali pirates in the north-east African nation offering the freedom of forty-six Indian kidnapped seafarers in return for the captured Somali pirates' freedom.
The message offering an exchange was dispatched mid-January to the Union Ministry of Shipping of India. It occurred just days before the trial of 120 pirates began in a Sewri fast-track court on the 21st of January, 2013.
Worried by the "lives deal" offer, the additional chief secretary recently held an arrangement in Maharashtra with authorities of the directorate-general of shipping and 2 senior police officers.
