At least fifty-five people were saved from a vessel which took in seawater as it was about to dock here Thursday.
A source of the Philippine Ports Authority that talked on condition of anonymity until details of the accident are officially published, told the MV Baleno 168 of Besta Shipping Company tilted on its starboard side when it reached this town’s port.
The ship sank at approximately 10 am after taking in water and when the crew members turned the vessel’s engine down, stated the captain of the vessel, Marlon Delda.
“All the 55 people onboard have been rescued. Our 29 crew members helped them get out of the ship,” Delda added the Inquirer.
He also told the ship left the Batangas port at 6:30 am.
The captain belied speculations that there were holes in the ship that caused it to sink.
“We are also investigating where the water came from,” he added.
He refused to talk about further details until he has given an official statement to port authorities and the Coast Guard.
