Armed security Guards on Norwegian vessels

The Government of Norway has taken a decision to permit armed guards on commercial Norwegian ships on a constant basis.
This began in 2011 as a trial step to help decreasing the number of pirate attacks and now became permanent.
"Till now we have good experiences with this arrangement. It wasn't a desired aim for us to introduce armed security guards, but it was necessary based on the threat level Norwegian ships were faced with. Now we've seen a dramatic decline in the number of pirate attacks," told the Minister of Trade of Norway Trond Giske.
The Association for Ships Engineers of Norway emphasized that armed security guards shouldn't become a replacement for the Norwegian military's presence in the waters where pirates operate.
