Somali pirates a menace to the ocean ecosystem

By Piracy

Research vessels about overfishing could not sail safely and do their job because of the pirate attacks in the area. There are other consequence of the piracy threat. Scientist cannot gather information about fish stocks and the species in danger. Illegal activities such as poaching flourishes.
"We can't monitor and we can't do experiments because of the pirates," explains Laurent Dagorn of France's Research Institute for Development (IRD).
Fear from pirates makes fishermen to leave the nets unattended for days, this is harmful for turtles, sharks and other species in danger.
Last March, a scientific ship was attacked by pirates prowling the waters around the Seychelles.
7 people were held in captivity for months.
The scientists were released but then it was clear that the Indian Ocean has to be avoided.
