Classification society DNV GL has publicly stated it will classify the largest international containership the MSC Oscar. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in January delivered the 19,244-TEU vessel, now in East-West national treasury service. The announced price of the construction was $140.5 million.

According to DNV GL, the vessel's container potential has been boosted through the application of the RSCS class notation (Route Specific Container Stowage).
RSCS has been made available by DNV GL to enable the more efficient use of freight capacity making it more flexible for onboard heavy loaded containers that will travel to specific destinations. Safety precautions will also have to be taken into consideration.
MSC's latest ship exhibits both efficiency and capacity. The construction of the main engine controls makes possible the automatic control of fuel consumption reporting both the state of the weather and speed. Furthermore, the vessel possesses a wide scope of optimal speeds to provide for flexible operations. For the duration of 20 years there has been an increase of the length of the biggest vessels in the range from 300 to 400m and container calibre has increased three times. The MSC Oscar's container intake (intended at the beginning at 18,000 TEU) has risen to 19,244 TEU during the construction process. That has happened through supplementing it with additional level above decks. There exists 1,800 reefer container capacity. Precarious goods can be transported in the holds.
"The state of the art containership is unique in its wide beam design and use of torsion box and hatch coaming plates with steel plate thickness up to 100mm," DNV GL commented.
MSC has ordered 18 more than 19,000+ TEU vessels. The delivery of the next one-MSC Oliver is anticipated for April this year.
