CMA CGM Georg Forster, the largest vessel in the CMA CGM Group’s fleet was christened yesterday (July 9) in Hamburg, Germany.
The ultra large new build is 398 metres long and has a capacity of 18,000 TEUs. The containership is the second in a series of six vessels with identical capacity, which will join the other 460 ships of CMA CGM fleet by the end of 2015.
The boxship Georg Forster began her first rotation sailing in the Group’s French Asia Line (FAL) after its delivery on June 2 in South Korea. The UK registered ship will call in total 11 different countries, including ports in the Mediterranean, China, Malaysia, Egypt, the Atlantic coast up north to Germany.
The new ultra large containership is equipped with an engine of the latest generation. It has an optimized hull design, a twisted leading edge rudder with bulb, which collectively decreasing the ship’s CO2 emissions by 10 percent compared to the previous vessel generation.
Preliminary measurements estimated emission of 37g of CO2/km for each container, which makes the CMA CGM Georg Forster one of the greenest cargo ships in the world.
The vessel is named after the famous 18th century German travel writer, who was part of the James Cook’s expedition in Southern Seas. Georg Forster is considered to be one of the founders of ethnology and anthropology.
Special guests at the Georg Forster’s christening ceremony were CMA CGM’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jacques R. Saadé; the vessel’s godmother, Christine Kuehne; and many institutional and political representatives, partners and clients of CMA CGM Group.
