MAN Diesel & Turbo SE received approval in principle regarding the company’s SCR system for their complete medium-speed engine selection’s compliance with all IMO Tier III regulations set by the China Classification Society (CCS). The company was awarded the approval during an awards ceremony that took place at the PrimeServ Academy, located in Shanghai on the 15th of April.
The required tests were performed on a MAN 8L21/31 auxiliary type of engine with an installed SCR system but the awarded certificate is viable for the complete medium-speed engine selection of the company. The MAN-constructed engine is to be employed for the purposes of the DFDS Seaways Ro-Ro vessel that is the Petunia Seaways. Several large ship owner companies along with licensees attended the ceremony.
The certificate was received by Goetz Kassing, MDT China Chairman and Head, on behalf of the entire MAN Diesel & Turbo from CSS Vice President, Sun Feng.
“By receiving this certificate we now get to mark a major milestone regarding our numerous collaboration efforts with CSS and it is essential for our aspirations of providing a full IMO Tier II package solution to all of our clients. It comes as one out of three total agreed-upon big steps in a long-term CCS relationship with the first step having been now accomplished following the first IMO Tier III EIAPP certificate regarding the 21/31 engine group that was issued back in February,” commented Dr. Daniel Struckmeier, MAN Diesel & Turbo, Head of Emission 2016, Senior Project Manager.

“The award that we received today on the other hand signifies the completion of the 2nd major step, which involved the MAN Diesel & Turbo-SCR modelling tool certification, covering the entire MAN Diesel & Turbo engine selection range, starting from 5L16/24 and going to 18V48/60. From this day forward every client we have can rip the benefits of the easy and sufficient way of IMO TIER II certification regarding all of our MDT four-stroke type engine systems. The final 3rd step has been scheduled to take place later on this year during autumn and it will center around the issuance of a general approval concerning our complete selection of engines based on the above-mentioned MAN Diesel & Turbo SCR modeling tool,” he further added.
Back in December of 2013, a Framework Agreement was signed by the company and CCS regarding Technical Cooperation during Marintec China. The two parties have managed to further enhance their co-op efforts since then, exploring various options in the aspects of ship technology, market cooperation and ship-type research and development projects.
