A new state-of-the-art extension to ABP’s Port of Garston’s Yara terminal has been officially opened to improve the port’s storage capacity.

Construction of the additional one-acre storage space began in early September this year and was successfully completed on schedule.

The extension was opened by Maria Eagle, MP for Garston and Halewood, who also first opened the Yara terminal in 2001.

Maria Eagle MP for Garston and Halewood, said: “It’s fantastic to see ABP Garston investing and developing the port activity here at Garston and I was particularly happy to open the extension of a facility I first opened 16 years ago.

“ABP’s Port of Garston, together with Silloth, Barrow and Fleetwood is part of the North West division of ABP, and together they contribute £510 million to our economy. This new facility will hopefully enable an even bigger contribution in future.”

Simon Barley, Yara UK Operations Manager, said: “Yara, with its partner ABP, have worked together to increase the storage at Garston Docks. Increased storage means Yara can stock and supply its grade portfolio more effectively to meet the needs of our North West and North Wales customers.”

Trevor Boyes, ABP Garston Port Manager, said: “At ABP we always strive to make processes more efficient and improve port facilities. We believe that this new extension for Yara UK will allow us to handle greater volumes and enhance our service delivery for a highly valued customer. The Port of Garston has invested heavily in the last 3 years and we will continue to do so to achieve our objective of delivering the best service levels in the Mersey”.
